It is with great sadness that I report the final chapter in the story of Buddy Holly and The Crickets has been written, as legendary singer/songwriter Sonny Curtis passed away in Tennessee on Friday afternoon, September 19, 2025, at the age of 88.
Sonny was born in Meadow, Texas on May 9, 1937. I won’t try to cover his entire story, as his musical accomplishments are far too many to list. The list includes writing songs such as “Rock Around With Ollie Vee” that was recorded by Buddy Holly in the 1950’s. He scored major hits in the 1960’s with “Walk Right Back”, recorded by The Everly Brothers and “I Fought The Law”, recorded by the Bobby Fuller Four (among many others).
He struck gold again in the 1970’s with “Love Is All Around”, the theme song to the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” that he recorded himself and “More Than I Can Say” that was recorded by Leo Sayer. Sonny co-wrote the Country Music Association’s 1989 “Single of the Year” in “I’m No Stranger To The Rain”, recorded by the late, great Keith Whitley. The song was the final single released during Whitley’s lifetime.
Sonny Curtis played and recorded with the late Buddy Holly before he became Buddy Holly & The Crickets and toured more than 50 years with The Crickets following the death of Buddy Holly in 1959. Sonny Curtis was a beloved figure in the music industry and was admired by fellow musicians and fans from around the world and will be sorely missed by all.
I am thankful to have called Sonny Curtis a friend of mine and will forever be grateful for the kindness he showed to me each and every time we spent time together. I am deeply appreciative of the pair of cowboy boots he presented to me (given to him by Waylon Jennings).
I can just imagine the reunion that took place today with Sonny and his family, along with J.I. Allison, Joe B. Mauldin, Niki Sullivan, and Buddy Holly. Something tells me that Phil and Don were there too. Sonny’s daughter Sarah Curtis is releasing a memoir in Fall 2025 called “Daughter of A Song”.
Rest In Peace forever, Sonny.
Rave On,
Randy Steele
