Good day,
Just an update on the T. V. listing I recently found.
On November 22, 1958, Buddy Holly appeared as a guest panelist on a T. V. show called Rate The Records. Other guests panelists were Mickey and Sylvia and Hugo Winterhalter. Bob Brown was emcee.
Originally, we thought this was a national show, but upon further research I learned it was a regional show to New York and the tri state area. (New Jersey, Connecticut, etc.) It aired on Saturdays, channel 13 at 6:00 p. m. It was a one hour show.
I have FOUR separate T.V. listings to confirm Buddy’s appearance. Three from newspapers and one from T. V. Guide (the bible of T.V. listings)
As an aside, I found it interesting, though it MAY be a coincidence, the date of this show, the inclusion of Mickey and Sylvia, and the fact Buddy recorded “Love Is Strange” AND “Dearest” in his apartment shortly after.
Ironically, on this same date, The Big Bopper was on the Dick Clark Beechnut Show lip-syching to "Chantilly Lace”!
Rate the Records premiered on August 15, 1958 (a date that should be familiar to Holly fans) George Skinner was the original host. There were a few different hosts during the shows run.
The October 18, 1958 episode included guest panelists: Lou Monte and Tommy Edwards
The December 13, 1958 episode included guest panelists: Tina Robin, Teresa Brewer and Tony Perkins.
The December 20, 1958 episode included guest panelists: Bobby Darin and Sandy Stewart
Rate The Records ran through the spring of 1960.
This is just ONE of the big surprises that will be in the upcoming Buddy Holly Day By Day updated.
And it will be made available for FREE in the upcoming year!
It is time to break the Holly community out of the doldrums.
Too many promised books that never came to be: (Norman Petty, Jerry Allison, Robert Linville, etc.)
And too many that cost way too much and delivered way too little!
Happy Holidays everyone!
