Is there a particular reason Lauren would show the paper to the others? If all it is about is her religious beliefs--however out of the mainstream--there doesn't seem to be a reason to do anything but grade it on the basis of the assignment. Lauren doesn't seem the type to parade a student's work about so she can say, "Look! I have a witch!" There would have to be something more to get her to show it around. Or perhaps one of the other teachers might read over her shoulder (Marla, perhaps).

Again, why would she ask her to explain, and why would she find it hard to believe?

The town I live in has a rather active pagan population. They don't seem to give a darn about what other people think. And in one person's case, that means she grows her plants and such in the front lawns of everyone who lives in her townehouse building.
