Ahh now...see that's where the confusion was. That actually isn't what you said the first time. You asked why do we think they 'should' do that. That would imply someone agrees with it. OK...now it makes sense. Sorry to get into semantics and grammar but that was the problem with understanding the question.

Now, as to why some students think it's acceptable or the only last resort to get a point across I have no clue. I think you need to ask some students because they are the ones right in the environment. Personally, I am a complete outsider. I have no kids, haven't been in school in years so stuff was different for me.
