Date Posted: 03/20/08 2:20:28pm In reply to: Chris 's message, "Re: K-9 Tactics Workshop" on 03/19/08 3:23:25pm Hello Chris, Yes K9 Tactics will have a muzzle attack scenario in the Personnel Safety K9 Night Examination. Below you will see the overview of this examination. I will have the rule book listed very soon and if you would like I can e- mail you a copy. Tomorrow I will be listing an Adversary / Decoy workshop in Hampton, Virginia. We can also come up your way and put on some workshops. K9 Tactics will have its first official trial this summer. Personal Safety K9 Examination (Night) According to the National Crime Victimization survey approximately two-thirds (63.2 percent) of rapes/sexual assaults and 71.7 percent of motor vehicle theft occur at night. Personal Safety K9 (Night) examination tests the preparedness of the Handler K9 team reflecting specific violent crimes that statistically show occur during the night time hours. Safety was a major concern when considering this examination so a current Personal Safety K9 (Day) certification is a requirement before attempting the Night examination. The Night examination will include a practical obedience phase and the proper use of K9 force phase. The obedience phase is a test to show K9 control in practical low light situations. The obedience will include but is not limited to off leash slalom heeling course, on leash heeling, off leash heeling, sits, downs, out of motion commands, recall to heel at an angle, right turns, left turns, change of pace, come command, finish command, about turns and down stay for five minutes with Handler out of sight. During the off leash portion of the heeling pattern there will be two agility obstacles for the team to negotiate. The agility obstacles may include but not limited to a tunnel, jump or a-frame. There will be distractions used through out the obedience pattern, which may include but not limited to gunfire, decoys, food and toys on the field. The proper use of K9 force phase will include a car jacking scenario, civil muzzle attack scenario and three surprise scenarios. Handlers must make decisions during the car jacking and three surprise scenarios based on the citizen’s use of force continuum, when to use K9 force and when K9 force is not justified. Handlers will further make the decision during the three surprise scenarios, if K9 use of force was utilized, when to deescalate the use of force. The three surprise scenarios will mimic today’s current low light crime trends. For safety all Handlers will be required to have in his/her possession a flashlight during all times when participating in both phases. The hosting club will provide night safety equipment including glow sticks which the Handler is required to properly utilize at all times during testing.
