Maureen 'Mau' Marcelo of Quezon Province proved to all and sundry how pure talent, determination and a dash of luck can help catapult a relative unknown to the brink of stardom. Last night, she edged out her two fiercest rivals by a slim 1.34% over the next highest vote-getter to capture the very first Philippine Idol title. She actually cornered a little over 35% of the votes, while the unannounced 2nd placer garnered 34% and the 3rd place with 30% of the same.

Marcelo now stands to receive a million pesos in cool cash, a recording contract with Sony-BMG, a non-exclusive talent contract with ABC-5 and the assigned talent management group of Fremantle, plus the chance to represent the country in the still-being-planned Asian Idol (where the winners from all over Asia plus the Pan-Arab region will compete) to be held next year.

Runners-up Jan Nieto and Gian Magdangal will each receive P250,000.00 in cash (a last-minute decision of ABC-5 head Tonyboy Cojuangco after being visibly impressed with the performances of the Big 3 last Saturday night) plus the opening of many doors of opportunity to further shine in the local music industry.

The Araneta Coliseum was clearly divided into three camps as supporters of the Big 3 were color-coded (Blue for Jan, Orange for Gian, Yellow for Mau) to easily recgnize the respective fans of each finalist. The final results' night was a show of amazing talent with the guest performances of all previously-eliminated Top 12 competitors and celebrities like Gary V., the band Cueshe, Aiza Seguerra (who did a duet with the equally manly Pow Chavez), Sex Bomb Dancers, and G Toengi. The three judges (Ryan C., Francis M. and Pilita C.) also performed onstage instead of making comments about the finalists.

There was no clear winner last night as any one among the 3 could have easily romped away with the top prize. When Marcelo (whose estranged Puerto Rican father flew all the way from the Carribean to witness his daughter's success) was announced as the winner, it was just a matter of the two other camps accepting the result as the percentage of votes was really close.

Congratulations to Mau! Kudos as well to Jan (more especially him as word has it that he has been sounded off with offers as early as halfway through the competition) and Gian because I'm pretty sure they will start receiving a lot of opportunities from rival TV stations and recording companies to further their music careers.
