Karen had a great idea with the acappella...I have one too and it works really well with getting up mucus! It isn't too hard on my throat either...and my vocal cords close easily when irritated, so that is always a concern of mine. I got mine through insurance a few years ago, so if your doc prescribes it your insurance may pay for it. Also, can you take something like guifensin (like PLAIN robitussin)? I actually take triaminic softchews for cough and sore throat and it seems to help, albeit for only a few hours. It is for kids, so it doesn't have many bad side effects for me...it just helps to dry me out. I hope you find something soon!!

Ivy
