- Greetings! -- Susan Schlick Schmidt, 12:57:15 02/17/05 Thu
Greetings from Susan Schlick Schmidt, Class of 1959.
I and my two brothers, Rolland (Mick) and Bill Schlick, attended Scarborough from 1953 through 1957 (when Thom Schuller was Headmaster). We actually lived in Scarborough (aka the Vanderlip Estate). Those were some of the best years of our lives, mainly because of Scarborough Country Day School and the wonderful friends we made there (not to mention our fantastic teachers – my high school French is still getting me along on our frequent trips to France!).
My brother, Mick (class of 1960), and I see each other often and every time we do, we reminisce about the “fun Scarborough years”. I think often about my classmates and wonder where their lives have taken them. (Renee and Harriet Meyers, Leslie Moglen, Philip Kane, Maddie LePidus, Frank ?, are just a few of my classmates.) One of my favorite memories is of being a cheerleader during the years our basketball team was among the best in the state! Anyone remember that?
After high school graduation (from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill.) I attended the University of Wisconsin. I have lived in California since 1965, graduating from California State University at Los Angeles. My professional life for the past 25 years has been as a human factors engineer for Lockheed Martin Corporation – working on some very exciting military programs, indeed!
Thanks, Ned, for creating this website! Now that I know of its existance, I will check back for any updates. (Your last name is familiar. Did you have an older brother?)

Went on from Scarborough to travel 72 countries, then college from there. I worked on the 1969 Woodstock Festival, as assistant to Michael Lang, finished college, became a Rolfer, got married had two kids, created The Ribbon Breath Meditation CD, went back to school became an Integrative Manual Therapist and a Shamanic healer. Now I'm living in Exeter New Hampshire and in a gypsy wagon, for a get away, in the woods, by a stream, which I built with a friend. Thats the short version of life after Scarborough. Those beautiful Beechwood trees, I will never forget!

- Scarborough School Ring -- Polly Puner, 06:03:28 02/20/04 Fri
I check this site occasionally to see if anyone from my year ('70) has posted anything. Hello to all.
I had my school ring (signet) stolen way back in '78, and keep thinking fondly of it. Any one have any ideas of how to get another? Josten's says they destroyed the die, so they cannot make another.
I have kept in touch with some classmates: Judi Weinstock (and Charlie Gerard); Janny Whippo; Crystal Spengeman, Andrea Smaill. Anyone who wants their email addresses, let me know.

I am the great-granddaughter of Howard P. Vanderlip, nephew of Frank A. and Narcissa C. Vanderlip. Until recently, I had no idea about this side of the family. My ggf died in 1988 and I was intrigued by the history of the school and it's origins. I wonder if anyone has any recollections of any family members encountered over the years and of the current state of the property, I can't seem to find much on current status of the Vanderlip's home, Beechwood, itself. Any info would be most appreciated. I hope there is enough interest to maintain your uniquely wonderful site.

I worked at Scarborough School from 1952 to 1960. I was both a teacher, later Director of Admissions and finally Asst. headmaster. I had Dudley, Ann and Sarah as students, and got to know Zinny Schoales, their mother quite well. I also remember Ned Depew. Dudley worked in Ossining as a teacher for a few years. Later he aplied to me for a position when I was Principal in Armonk at the Byram Hills Schools. I also recall that he ran a retaurant in Scarborough for some time. I have many memories of Beechwood-the pool wa usen in the summer as a camp pool, run by Fulton Main who was Asst. headmaster. Zinny Schoalesd and her husband lived in a converted barn, also on the property. If you have specific questions, I might be able to help.Have you read Susan Cheever's book, Home after Dark which also recounts stories of Scarborough and her father John Cheever,

- NEW E MAIL -- Karen Gold Ferrandi, 09:36:40 10/03/08 Fri
I was so amazed and overjoyed to find this site and did post bout 7 months ago to Ned and all regarding my years at Scarbrough and my relationships with Dudley, Sarah and Anne...and the Schoales family.
My new E mail address is :francoferrandi555@hotmail.com I did read today (October 3 2008) of the upcoming reunion at Annies..I would have loved to attend that..I think Anne was about 13 years old or so when i last saw her.
At any rate my husband of 35 years and I live in both West Palm Beach Florida and Brevard North Carolina. He is from Milan Italy, we met on a deserted beach in the Bahamas in 1970 and strangely enough this man had actually met Dudley Schoales and spent an evening at the Vanderlip house as he dated a woman who Dudley was friends with.!! Now is that not either fate or a very small world! We are expecting our fourth grandchild on October 14 2008 and will be in California for this event and to congregate for the holidays with our 3 children and now 4 grandchildren.
I would so love to hear from any of the multitude of other Scarboroughites I knew..I was called Cookie Gold by most and would have been graduating class of 1960. Because I attended Scarbrough for so many years , I know so many both younger and older students from my Scarborough days.
I did manage to meet up with Amalia Lovatt( class of 60) who lives in the Caribe for the last 20 years and that was a great "blast from the past" to spend the day with her and her husband at their lovely home high on a mountain overlooking the sea.
I am so interested in knowing about Sarah Schoales. I know that Dudley passed away which saddened me greatly as i met Dudley at age 4 when we both began kindergarden at Scarbrough. So many other childhood friends..Hank Rhode..Creighten Hooker..Susie Brown...Chuck Vilette..Mary Toohey..John and Frank Schmidt..Maddie LaPidus Pattie Nelson..Rene Meyers..and countless others from my many years at Scarbrough.
Also I lost my class ring many years ago and saw someone had found one. Its not mine but I was wondering if somehow I could make arrangements to "borrow" that ring ( I would pay all shipping back and forth and insurance) so that i could have it coppied. That would mean so much to me..it was a great part of my childhood that is missing with the ring...
Well looking forward to either e mails or posts at our site. Scarbrough was so unique and though I was a "wild child" and probably still am a rebel at 65...I learned so many valuable lessons from my years at Scarborough that have shaped my life in a very positive way.
Best to All

I attended SCDS '65-'67 and would have been Class of '71 had I stayed. I went on to RCDS (followed by Doug Higgins, Lynne Henninger, Bill Campbell!).
I have lived in Norwich, VT for 25 years. This past weekend (10/25/08), our local paper commemorated the 40th anniversary of the crash in Hanover, NH that took the life of Liane Birnbaum. I look across to Moose Mountain & in all these years have never made the connection...anyway, that is how I found this site.
I have wonderful memories of Scarborough; great teachers, the above-mentioned as well as Stillman, Oksner, Coldiron, Mmes. Davidson et Guccione, Solit, Corn... "Little Mary Sunshine", "Lil' Abner". The smell (yeah-not good) of the robes for Christmas pageant. swimming at the Y in Tarrytown.

I've seen a couple of references to Coach Russ Simon lately. In the Spring of 1967 Dick VanWeezel and I were seniors. About 2:00 one afternoon we cut out of school and went down the road toward Ossining for a beer. The place had a horseshoe bar and we sat down and got a beer. As we talked we looked across the bar and saw Coach Simon sitting there drinking. We gulped our beers and tried to get out. He motioned us over and said, "You dont' know wheere you got your last beer, boys." We nodded and split.

- Montessori Education -- Aviva Rahmani, 20:05:18 05/02/08 Fri
I was at SCDS from the sixth thru my freshman year. I would have graduated in 1962. As it turned out, that was the longest I would spend at any school in my academic career, which culminated with an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. I had no idea SCDS had been based on Montessori principles till I went thru the website. So I did some research, coming across the following url from Maria Montessori's book, with an illustration from a "Tarrytown" schoolroom, which has to be SCDS:
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/montessori/method/349.gif
My strongest educational memories include of "Sully" Sullivan, my first art teacher, who tried to teach me a great deal of wisdom along with painting, Mrs. Drew who steered me into the Beechwood Players and, was it Mr. Schuller (?) who taught World Religions from a college textbook to us in the seventh grade. I do know those three teachers fostered my intellect & creativity, for which I am very grateful.

- Politics?!? -- Ned Depew, 10:57:06 01/08/03 Wed
Friends -
My impression is that, in spite of the school's origins in a private family fortune and private philanthropy, the educational tenor of Scarborough was distinctly "progressive."
The adoption of the techniques of Madame Montessori - whose work was primarily with the disadvantaged, and was about self-discipline, self-discovery and self-direction - and the school's open admissions policy at a time when many private schools sought to be "exclusive," in the worst and most restrictive sense, seem to me indications of a real concern with social issues and with thoughtful self-evaluation and self-improvement as the goals of education.
Small classes and close relations between students and teachers promoted highly "personalized," problem-solving approaches to education, rather than a "method"-based one-size-fits-all approach, instilling the idea of individually-based, flexible, innovative responses to learning (and life) situations, rather than rote, idologically or philosophically based reflexes.
It certainly didn't hurt that Narcissa Vanderlip - Frank's widow, and the "founder" we honored each year - was a firebrand suffragette in her day, and a close associate of Eleanor Roosevelt for some time, as a fellow campaigner for women's rights and social justice.
For me, this early influence has translated into a lifelong affinity for progressive politics - for ways to realize the mottoes I was exposed to every school day for many years, and to live out the ideals of civilty and service they promoted.
I wonder how that has played itself out in the lives of others? What sort of politics do Scarborough graduates embrace today? What parts of that education do we use today when considering options and making choices?
I look forward to hearing others views and expereinces.
N

- Class of '66 -- J.P. (Jay) Smith, 18:21:40 03/12/08 Wed
I returned to teach in the English department (in fact, inheriting Bud Stillman's room, desk and the big oval table, as well as the famous Stillman Paper Library) seven years after graduating from Scarborough. Before then I earned two degrees in English, and after teaching for four years, often alongside such former teachers as Mrs. Creighton, Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Zades and, of course, Coach Simons, moved with my wife (on the Lower School faculty) to the UK, where we lived for five years and where I began my writing career.
We returned with our dual-citizenship daughter (now 26 and in the music business in NYC), and since then I've been a full-time writer. I've published five novels both here and the UK (under the name J.P. Smith), and have worked on screenplays, as well.
I attended the reunion of a few years back and was very happy not only to see former colleagues from the faculty, but to spend time with many of my former students, now parents in their own right, all of whom I remember with great fondness. Hope we can all do it again some day.
There is a Yahoo Scarborough Group, by the way: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Scarborough_Reunion/

- Is Anybody Out There? -- Jennifer McLaughlin, 09:36:15 07/19/07 Thu
Hey, is there anybody out there that was in Scarborough's elementary school from '61-ish to '68-ish? I've read a lot of high school memories here, but so far nothing from before. I started kindergarten in '61 and left after 6th grade in '68. I have wonderful memories of sledding down the hill in the winters, practicing endlessly the dancing-around-the-maypole in the spring (we didn't get to do the weaving thing until 4th grade), planting tulip bulbs in the fall.... walking across the bridge for art class with Mr. Andrews at the "big" school and playing kickball way down in that field. The absolute best was when we got to take off our shoes play down by "the brook" under the bridge. I remember I got to play the dove in some play we did with Mrs. Zades about Noah's Ark, and I still remember most of the words to those Thanksgiving songs she had us do every year, and the ones from the Christmas pageant too. Remember when the king's donkey created a big scene and wouldn't go down the aisle?
The teachers I had were Mrs. Sternback, Purdy (sp?), Weigel, Ackley and Lawrence (in that order) and then Mary Andrews for 5th and Ernest Solit for 6th (his favorite word was "bonehead") and Mrs. Henninger for Gym. I'd love to hear from or about Leda Blumberg, Paula Greenthal, Vicky Richardson, Ann Mellow, Erlyne Gee, Susan Dighton, Nina Gerosa, Andy Cross, Johnny Wunderlich, Lowell Gallin, Seth Kreisberg, Victor Valentine, Adam Smellin, Don Reiman, Tommy Arminio, Lynn Corham, Alex Dunaif or anyone else that might remember me, just to see if I imagined some of the best years of my life or if they really happened!

- Some teachers and events--and two students -- Doug Higgins, 16:34:48 07/12/05 Tue
The following from the late ‘60’s might jog some memories. All my students I do remember. But here I have put primarily teachers and events.
Fulton Main: Chain smoking in class. The only class he ever missed was his last.
Bud Stillman: The endless handouts and those inimitable comments on essays that really never made the grade. In my mind, the greatest teacher I ever knew. He asked everything from a student; the student gave more than he ever thought he could.
An elderly Zinnie Schoales: long dress, cane, barely glancing to either side, walking through the halls with aristocratic grace—an image of a by-gone era most of us saw only dimly.
Catherine Zades: The operetta. Greek fire. How could so much energy be packed into such a tiny bundle? A school that size really did do the Magic Flute?
Joe Corn: The crime scene. So, what did you think you saw?
Dick Andrews: He never stopped drawing.
The Christmas Pageant and Fulton Main singing.
May Day on the Vanderlip lawn. The Maypole. Small children singing. It was their day.
The Scarborough Fair.
Bob Mellow and the Yurt. Tell us again why we needed a yurt.
Smoking pot down by the stream. (Should be put to music, I think.)
Johnny Adams and Liane Birnbaum: They should be remembered. I will never forget either of them.

- from Scarborough to Maui -- Rena Blumberg, class of '67, 00:00:27 12/12/07 Wed
Nice to see this site. I left Scarborough in Dec. of my Senior Year (1966) to go to California and live in a commune. It was glorious fun. Gave birth to my son Vishnu at home on the commune in northern Cal in 1970. Eventually moved to Maui where I live now. I work as a midwife/labor assistant. I enjoy swimming with dolphins, the ocean, waterfall pools, hiking, yoga, dancing, and drum circles. My daughter Osheana was born on Maui in 1986.
Though I attended some college in the 60's in Cal (UC Davis & Sonoma State) I am now back in school working on a BA in Peace Studies at the University of Hawaii. I'm also a peace activist and work in the public schools educating our children about the realities of the Iraq war (based on lies) and the realities of enlisting in the military. The enlistment form states that in times of war a person in the military may be held for service long past their original termination date. It also states that the military has the right to change the rules without notifying the enlistees, and that they are subject to the new rules. I come with alternative options to the GI Bill for scholarships, service, and travel. The current GI Bill is a scam. Only about 15% of those eligible actually are able to use the funds, and the funds are very limited.
I've also been learning ASL, American Sign Language, and am learning how to teach deaf children to read. I teach babies to swim.
I enjoyed my days at Scarborough. I enjoyed the sports: field hockey, basketball, softball. I remember the dances and the sock hop that was cancelled the day JFK was shot.
aloha and best wishes to all.

I attended Scarborough from 8th to 12th grades and graduated in 1972.
I must say it is so strange see names and view correspondence from people I have not heard from or thought of for more than 30 years.
Mr. Higgins - I remember you...I attended a summer English class the late 60's which you taught. A reading assignment included The Great Gatsby.

Unfortunately, the committee arranging the 2007 reunion is having a problem finding a venue for dinner in and around the school. Country Clubs are all booked with weddings etc. However, we would will like to visit the school in the spring and perhaps arrange dinner at a local restaurant. There isn't time to send out a formal notice, so we would like you to reply to this web site with any interest in joining us. Perhaps one of you would also have a suggestion for a restaurant that would give us a prix fixe dinner. I imagine we will have about 40 to 50 people. You can e-mail me at marijaneshaw@hotmail.com with any suggestions. Clearview is fine with us meeting there. I'm thinking June23rd.

- Sabaidee -- Barbara Lewis, 07:05:18 02/28/06 Tue
I discovered this forum by chance so thought I'd say 'hi.' I went to SCDS from 1968 - 1970 (10th and 11th grades) then a college accepted me for early admission. Since then I've meandered through various professions - registered nurse, ceramic artist, art teacher, psychiatric nurse in the US and refugee camps in Thailand, and now, physician assistant. In 1990, I happened to have car problems in front of the school, so I got a chance to take a look around. Since then I haven't been able to stop by; I've been living in Laos since 1996, working in a medical project improving medical services and helping people who are still being injured by unexploded ordnance and land mines.
'Hi' to any former classmates.

- Some fond memories -- Russ Ellis, 07:57:30 01/24/06 Tue
While I may have spent my high school years elsewhere, and although "the 60s" were truly tumultuous and difficult times, my five years ('63-'68) at SCDS with the class of '72 provided me with memories that I'll cherish always.
Most of the folks who have written a few words here have drawn upon the fond recollections of their young adulthood. For me though, my SCDS years occurred during that still, but nearing an end, magical time when childhood transitions to youth. The tranquility of the Scarborough/Beechwood setting, often (too often) chattered by the news of the horrors of the times about, helped nurture my youthful notions. Along with home & family, it also provided safe haven for the beginning of the quest that is both the understanding & the exploration of one's life's purpose.
I was recently able to take a brief stroll down memory lane and touch The Beechwood Tree (yup- still there, carvings and all, nestled among the nearby condominiums) that I had long ago climbed as a boy. I tossed a pebble into the pond where my schoolmates & I had placed ice hockey during the winter and gazed upon the field (now a residential yard for the adjacent condos.) where I had frolicked around the Maypole, played soccer & toiled with the Half-Mile ([way!] behind fellows that were becoming men) as a twelve year old youngster (what ever was I thinking!).
It was nice to happen across this web site and to see names still present in the recesses of my memory. They...you've helped rekindle a few of wonderful recollections. Thank you.
Russ Ellis

- Next reunion ... 2007? -- Linda Albert, 17:48:29 08/22/05 Mon
I had planned to attend this year's reunion, but circumstances changed and unfortunately I missed it. Was there any talk of the next reunion?
The class of '57 celebrates it's 50th in '07. I'd be happy to work with others from my class who would like to plan a get-together. We had a very successful gathering for our 40th year at Mark Chadwin's home in Westchester. Anyone interested?

Friends -
Things have been very quiet here. If this isn't a service we want to use, we ought to just get out of the way and not clutter up the web (large thought it is) with unwanted and unused pages.
So, please speak up - if we want this place, we need to use it. After a certain amount of time without activity, Voyforums will simply cancel us. Please use this space, or if it is of not interest, let me know and I'll let it go.
Thanks,
N

- Hello out there -- Amy Sinberg, 08:25:26 03/29/05 Tue
Can't believe its been 56 years since I graduated, class of 1949. Looking through the old Beechwood Trees I remember particularly those teachers who made a difference in my life and I'm sure in the lives of many students. Mr. Main: I wanted a life in science after his classes in biology and chemistry until I came upon the reality of math phobia and dropped that idea, but interest in science has never faded. And he had a wonderful singing voice too. Mr. Held, art teacher, who was not only a beautiful man but who was a inspiration not only to "do" art but to appreciate it. Mr. Palmer: how can I ever express my thanks to him. Literature and books became a mainstay in my life and if my house has more bookshelves in it than anything else, its all his fault. And finally, Miss Willins who never let adversity stop her for a moment. She became a good friend and was matron of honor at my wedding. As for me, I graduated from Drake University with a theater major, came back to New York to graduate from The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, got married, moved to Westchester, had two wonderful children, got divorced, went back to school to receive a MLS from Syracuse University and became the University Archivist for 26 years. As a side advocation I had five horses in the barn for the 10 years of our equine interest when my children were immersed in the local Pony Club and I taught dressage there. Now that the horses have been sold, the children grown, grandchildren getting ready for the college search,I, retired, share my house with three dogs, 2 retired racing greyhounds and one energetic whippet. Now is the time to sit back and remember? Right? No way. I am busier than I have ever been having returned to my first love, theater. Attending a Saturday Acting Workshop, writing short plays, and, after 50 years, appearing in a Comminity Theater play in a great part. There is more, much more, but that's enough for now. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. And to Ned, thanks for this site. Its a great gift.

- Fondest of Memories! -- Rolland "Mick" Schlick, Class of 1960, 20:54:00 03/03/05 Thu
Thanks for all your hard work, Ned! I'm sure all of the Scarborough School alumni greatly appreciate your efforts to preserve our Fondest of Memories - our wonderful years at Scarborough Country Day School!
When my sister, Suzie, told me about this website a week ago, I immediately started a list of all my classmates. I finally remembered all of them, and sent the list to Robert at the other Scarborough website:
www.hv-hypnosis.com/ScarboroughSchool/
After attending 2 other highschools in Massachusetts and Illinois, I graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a Master's in Civil Engineering.
I have worked as a Registered Professional Civil Engineer and Licensed General Contractor in Washington State, California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Alaska.
My wife Alice & I currently own and manage a motel in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of southern California, which we designed and built ourselves, called Kern River Golden Trout Resort. We would love to see any and all Scarborough School alumni - please come stay with us!

- A visit with Thom Schuller -- Ned Depew, 08:59:29 05/14/04 Fri
In response to the note below from Richard Jeffers, I sent him a response recounting some of my memories of Mr. Schuller, who was the head of the school when I first joined in 1953 (and had been for a few years) and remained until the Spring of '58.
I sent a letter to Thom in Beirut, and got a message in reply that he was on the verge of making one of his rare visits to the US. I called him in New York City, and made arrangements to meet him at the Yale Club, where he was staying.
My wife and I drove down, for what turned out to be a most interesting and enjoyable conversation and visit that went on for better than two hours.
It was a fascinating experience to become re-acquainted with this man, whom I last saw in 1958 when I was twelve years old and he was in his forties. I am happy to report that at the age of 86 Thom Schuller still embodies the two Scarborough mottoes. He is a man of great warmth, charm and courtesy and he has devoted his life to service, in one of the most difficult and demanding regions of the world.
Our conversation ranged from reminisence - how interesting to review events and have an opportunity to see them from a totally different perspective than one's own - to discussion of the current political climate, especially with reference to Thom's long and intimate experience of the middle east. His insights and analysis were incisive and revealing - really provocative in the best sense.
Thom is living a challenging and exciting life - sometimes perhaps a bit more exciting than he might wish - and he has clearly embraced it with energy and enthusiasm, as well as with a strong sense of personal responsibility and integrity.
I looked up to him as a youngster, and having met him again, I can say that my intuition then, of the outstanding kind of person he was, has been borne out over time, and I look up to him still. It was a great pleasure to sit and talk with him, and I look forward to doing so again in the future.
I am sure Thom would welcome letters from anyone who cares to write. If anyone would like to hear more about our conversation, I'd be happy to e-mail you.

- Checking in -- Bill Mann, 09:02:56 06/15/03 Sun
I just discovered this page, which is a great idea and long overdue. It does need some publicity (e.g., Alumni reunion mailings, etc.). I'm from way back, when we had such educators as Dean McClusky, "Dad" Mattern, Mike Koenig, Ernie Hanes, Miss Hallock, etc. That was 1938. Hope this forum keeps growing further. Bill Mann

- Scarborough School -- Paul Miller, 14:57:58 12/05/02 Thu
A quick posting from Paul Miller, Class of '65. Thanks to Ned for setting this up. I am here in Armonk where I have been for 20 years and before that a mile away in P'ville. Wife Debby and son Luke 22years old. Currently retired from a successful nightgown business and having fun trying to play golf and getting ready to look for something more substantial. Still see some Scarborough alumni fairly frequently and e-mail some others. Among them are John agnello, Steve Heyman, Steve Meyer, George Luthin, Frank Laskey, Shawn Bayer and Helen Lederer. Would love to see or communicate with more. Still miss the place and all it did for me. Wish it had been ther for our kids.
Best to all.

- Welcome to the Scarborough School Virtual Reunion -- Ned Depew, 13:15:25 11/27/02 Wed
This is a message board I have created as an adjunct to the Scarborough School web-site. I hope those who visit the board will also come here and share a bit of their history, their memories, their ideas and the ways in which their Scarborough days influenced the life they are now living.
I look forward to spirited discussions from a variety of points of view on the issues that engage our interest. I will try not to intervene as an administrator - just leave everything up to our own collective discretion, remembering that "Manners Maketh Man."
I do ask that all posters identify themselves. You need not supply an e-mail address, but it will make getting in touch with you easier. Anonymous or unidentified posts may be removed at my sole discretion if I think they are likely to offend unnecessarily. I enjoy respectful, civil controversy, but expect everyone to be prepared to stand behind their words.
Let's enjoy this chance to expand our school and appreciate and celebrate our experiences there and beyond.
Ned Depew
