One certainty in this life is that we can take nothing material with us to the grave,yet for all our supposed higher human intellect we are driven to desire and accumulate that which ultimately we cannot hold onto.....Rich or poor we leave this world left with only that indefinable ethereal force that is perhaps our spirits to float off into the infinite realms of the universe.....

Few could put such thoughts into words with such elegance as the mystical Christina Rossetti 1830 - 1894 with her apparent preoccupation with the afterlife...You can listen to this online sound poem set to music at the following link..

One certainty

Vanity of vanities, the preacher saith,
All things are vanity. The eye and ear
Cannot be filled with what they see and hear
Like ealy dew, or like the sudden breath
Of wind, or like the grass that withereth
Is man, tossed to and fro by hope and fear:
So little joy hath he, so little cheer,
Till all things end in the long dust of death.
To-day is still the same as yeaterday,
To-morrow also even as one of them;
And there is nothing new under the sun:
Until the ancient race of Time be run,
The old thorns shall grow out of the old stem,
And morning shall be cold and twilight gray.
