Time as a theme appears in several of the poems of Keith Douglas (1920 - 1944) as if to predict his own early demise. This one written in 1940 before his military service seemingly vents some of his anger at being spurned by a girl he had developed a fondness for whilst a student at Oxford. Adegree of jealousy is evident from additional lines which he didnt use in his final draft ."My sacred lady without art" alludes to his judgement that the object of his affections had chosen an idiot over him... Heres the link to the page where you can listen online to this classic poem set to music.

A Round Number

The monotonous evil clock
is creeper climbing on my heart
and with rank ivy will pull down
my hope of happiness and renown.

My sacred lady without art
gives an idiot place to mock.

I know the fragrant girl is dead
and perished with my innocence
and died two hundred years ago
or twice that timeif time is slow,

and I think for recompense
she only lived inside my head.

Well she is gone: but I remember
my early promise, looking for
comfortablefame to make it amends.
And here my last existence ends.

For I cant feed hope anymore
and time has reached a round number.
