Subject: The Siren (senryu format)

Siren (senryu format)

The siren’s singing
attracted him to her first
then her beauty struck.

Her long golden locks
with cascading curls blew free
in gay abandon.

Her eyes like blue steel
twinkled with secret desire
glinting like cold ice.

Bathing on her rock
reclining luxuriously
naked in the sun.

He noticed her breasts
tanned, firm, pointing heavenward
then he glanced downwards.

Silver green and blue
a myriad of colours
sunlight reflected.

A sight to behold
never before he had seen
the mermaids tail swish.

Closer and closer
he steered his boat towards her
no rocks did he see.

Her singing lured him
she enthralled him with her charm
dangerous beauty.

Helpless to prevent
the catastrophe at sea
he watched his boat sink.

The siren saw all
then her smile turned to despair
mischief gone so wrong.

Like a golden fish
she dived with grace through the depths
hair streaming behind.

She found her lost prey
he was bound within the reeds
losing consciousness.

A silent prayer
accompanied them both up
as they broke surface.

Looking down at him
as he lay within her arms
she hoped he would stay.
