He drowned in this sea
spilt like a chemical sadness,
tumbler clenched like a talisman
in the shaking hand

It was warm, womblike
in this sea, here, where he has swum
many times; tumbling
in the dregs in the tumbler,
stretching head over heels, like an acrobat
here in this chemical sadness

When the pen was emptied,
spent, a flaccid rune of betrayal,
when the ink spewed
in a frechete from the nub
he was numbed,
hence he swam in its spilt blue sea,
its chemical sadness

With his toe on the trigger
and lips locked tightly around the barrel,
and the stock knock-knock-knocking on the floor,
bumped by last breath's bellyful,
escaping down death's abyss
hiding in the barrel

When last breath's duty was done
there still lingers a stench
of the wont to die,
of an old man and the sea
of chemical sadness
