Subject: Haven't You Forgotten Something?

(This is a rebuttal poem/song to Darryl Worley's #1 country smash "Have You Forgotten", a pro-war anthem. Personally, I find that song to be the worst country song ever and decided to write this heartfelt rebuttal. Read the chorus like the chorus in the original Darryl recording!)

Haven't You Forgotten Something?

Yes, I still hear people saying we need this war
But fail to stop to think what we are fighting for
Guess it depends what definition of freedom you follow
It's all such a difficult pill to swallow
And you leave the authenticity pigeon-holed and unclear
There in the sixth drawer of your chiffonier
Hey, we never realize the mess we get ourselves in
So heck, why not glorify the survival of the fittest
Divide and conquer the world, hey, it's only fair
I'm no sortilege, prophet, perhaps not even debonair
But if you think war's the right thing to do
Then I won't try to change your mind or force you
But before you go on preaching back at me
Allow me to ask you a question in response with all courtesy...

Haven't you forgotten of the whole notion
To forgive and to forget
To turn the other cheek and wish them well?
Haven't you forgotten when the bombs went down
Those civilians were just like those in the towers
Going through a hell of their own
Is that your excuse 'bout bin Laden?
Haven't you forgotten something?
"I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven"

I've seen them take all the footage off the T.V too
And the media censor it all in impromptu
Say it's too disturbing to see it all on this soil apparently
But when it's all on foreign soil that's a whole different story
I see boys and girls growing up way too fast
Media mergers cutting all of childrens programming in half
What would Mr. Rogers be saying now in his rocking chair up above
With Fox News dissolving the doctrines and all the love
If you are serious about showing the footage every day
Then come on, right now, let's throw all innocence away
Let's teach all those children how to relate
In a brave new world and allow them to accept hate
The local church can merge with MSNBC
Hymns and kyries can be bought out by the FCC
If you say this countrys out looking for a fight
Well, I don't believe in war, so does that make me tripe?
Don't get me wrong, I grieve for the victims of 9/11
And if you say I don't love America, then you're mistakin'
But if revenge always has to be the answer
Man, I say this whole world is heading for total disaster...

Haven't you forgotten to hail to the chief?
No, I'm not talking about the President
I'm talking about Him
Haven't you forgotten about liberty
And justice for all?
For everyone across the world
And is that your excuse 'bout bin Laden?
Haven't you forgotten something?
"I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven"

Well, I've been there with our soldiers too
Who had to see the awful sights of war
And don't you think they have the right to question
Exactly what they're fighting for?
As they look into the eyes of all the innocent
Locked in their own mental straight jackets
Dazed in fatigue and smitten with chilblain
Sometimes so much it can drive someone insane?
My 9-year old sister says watching the coverage in slow-mo
Reminds her of just another disturbing reality show
Seems like it's all just another ingenius slush fund
One that you can't segue or run away from
Can't we just kiss and hug for once than hugger-mugger?
Is that too much to ask or am I just some hopeless dreamer?
Why make the clouds nimbostratus when they're already stratocumulus?
When I listen to my crystal radio even then the bad news is omnipresent!
Excuse me and forgive me if I exaggerated
But I feel this whole plan is incredibly overrated
Now I see you're beginning to go goggle-eyed
Call me a heretic, a hypocrite, numb and blind
But I know the truth and I won't prevaricate
I won't inveigle or whine, I'll only commiserate
So before you throw me in a detention home or objurgate
Please answer this question, that's all I have to say...

Haven't you forgotten all the other people killed overseas?
Yes, they're only human too, all lying motionless on their fields
Haven't you forgotten about their children
And their mothers, fathers, siblings lost
Left alone to cope and move on
Crying to the sky "Why, why?"
Is that the best excuse you can make 'bout bin Laden?
Haven't you forgotten something?

Haven't you forgotten something too?
Haven't you forgotten something too?

And that's the most wonderful thing about creating. It will always be a mystery.

***Shakira***
