JUST LIKE YOU

My skin is withered and worn
I see yours is untouched
Pristine in condition
I look at myself in the mirror
I am jealous
I want to be just like you

I take a razor from the drawer
Place the tip under my ear
With a surgeon's concentration
Glide the razor across the jawbone
To the other ear
Dig my nails into the groove of the incision
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
The hate within my head
The horror of what a mind can create
The terror a brain can cause when focused
Guilt and compassion
Tossed away with the skin
Now I think just like you

I put the razor under my jaw
Slide it down the throat
Deep and precise
Until I hit the collar bone
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
Me swallowing my fear
Fear of losing control
Murderers, rapist, molesters, gangs, and drug dealers
The fear of taking back your neighborhood
Afraid to state your opinion
Swallowing the fear to speak out
Courage and nobility
Tossed away with the skin
Now I choke just like you

I guide the razor carefully
Down the length of my torso
Methodically
In a straight line
'Til I reach the waistband
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
The coldness of my heart
The ability to ignore a homeless man
The arrogance to demean a woman with food stamps
The ease to eat a warm meal
While a starving child stares through a cold window
Avoiding a smile to warm the heart
Sympathy and humanity
Tossed away with the skin
Now I feel just like you

I run the razor down the inside of my arm
Switch the razor to my other blood filled hand
And follow through down the other arm
Carefully
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
The closing of my arms
Never to embrace a battered child
Unable to give shelter to a molested victim
To push away a child who just wants to be held
Responsibility and caring
Tossed away with the skin
Now I touch just like you

I penetrate the skin on my leg
Move the razor down the inside
From thigh to ankle
Follow through on the other leg
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
The strength of my legs
The ability to run away from racism
To run when another is scrutinized for their disabilities
Change directions when someone is beaten
For their religious beliefs
To hurdle a person murdered for sexual preference
Running away from difference
Empathy and respect
Tossed away with the skin
Now I flee just like you

I cut into the top of my foot
Glide it to the toes
Sever the skin on the other ankle
And repeat the process
Delicately
I peel the skin back
There
You have a clear view
No feet to stand on
The inability to stand up for which you believe
To take a stance
Against the prejudices and horrors of the world
To stand up and speak your mind
To stand up and make a difference
Faith and pride
Tossed away with the skin
Now I am weak just like you

I have shed my skin
Ready to absorb the abuse of mankind
I now have the ability to turn my head
And cast a blind eye
To the horrors of the world
I look into the mirror
I am just like you
