i, too, should stop rambling on this subject. but it's just such a fascinating subject - the mind and an (emotion?) manipulating life and behaviours.

You are right, Gray, by saying that naming, categorising, and placing tags on ourselves is often not a healthy way to overcome any problems... one of my favourite examples to show this point is that of 'alcoholism'. i know someone (not myself) who really believes that he is and always will be an alcoholic. he has 'read up' on the subject. and the archaic writings on drug dependency suggest that 'once an alcholic always an alcoholic'. it has been researched that alcohol dependency is 'in the genes', even so, to call one's self an 'alcoholic' is to perpetuate the problem. the term 'self-fulfilling prophecy' comes to mind. to label one's self as 'depressed Avy' (for eg), can have similar repercussions. instead, perhaps say, my name is Avy (for eg), and i am currently undergoing a state of depression. Depression is an illness, and, like the flu, can be overcome. Depression is a state of mind. It HAS been attributed to physiological causes. however, it has also been attributed to the way that we perceive the world. for eg, thinking in positive terms cured me of depression, a few years ago. [if anyone wants to know more about overcoming depression, feel free to email me. i am not a backyard quack, even though i do have a degree in psychology i'm not a practising psych].

this is why i suggested the terms 'hankering' and 'quest', it was just to try and minimise the graverity (is that a word?) of depression... to approach it in a positive light. to try and understand depression, rather than just accepting it. once it's understood, it's easier to control. once it can be controlled, it can be overcome.

and, ok ok, this is the last i'll ramble on this. but anyone feel free to email me.
