I think some of the American speeches often give a rose-tinted image that many people - often referred to as 'minorities' despite their huge number cannot relate to.

The so called majority forget that all are 'new' to America, excepting of course the Native Americans who already lived there. There is a rich blending of cultures but now there seems a hegonomy of cultures.

I think many people, particularly before the Depression thought of America as providing the American Dream but through the stockmarket crash, machinery taking over jobs and other factors were betrayed by the promise and hope of freedom and independence. This poem shows the betrayal of this promise turned sour where some people feel more rejected than welcomed.

Sometimes the rhyming seems a little forced, for example the lines

'I feel guilty and want to sob
When i get accused for stealing a job'

the 'sob' to fit in with the next line loses the depth of the poem

This is a poem that can be further developed as so many could relate to it.

>Welcome To America
>
>
>There is a woman who beckons a call
>Out in a harbor she stands tall
>Wields a torch for all to see
>Offering peace and liberty
>
>Left my home for a better chance
>Wanted an opportunity to advance
>Found my way to the land of plenty
>Now i am labeled as a minority
>
>I feel guilty and want to sob
>When i get accused for stealing a job
>All i want is what America yields
>Even if i have to work the fields
>
>The lady says to bring me your tired
>Freedom to work is all i desired
>Tired of not having a voice
>To make a decision, to make a choice
>
>The lady says to bring me your hungry
>So i came to the land of milk and honey
>Left a nation succumbed by oppression
>To become an excuse for your recession
>
>The lady says to bring me your poor
>I strive to give my family more
>As i stepped upon your soil
>I am the reason for angst and turmoil
>
>Are you intimidated by me
>Being here in the land of the free
>Or is prejudice what you crave
>sheltered in your home of the brave
