Subject: Tightrope

Tightrope

A step. Cautious, tentative
Along the wire.
Place each trembling foot
Ahead of the other, slowly.

How high is too high?
How long the fall?
One slip, one mistake
And you will know.

Balance is life.
A precarious journey
For old, tired legs
Struggling for equilibrium.

The rope sways in the wind.
How much breeze is too much?
Counterpoise the zephyr
Or take the last flight.

Do not look down,
No turning back.
The terminus is shrouded
In misty uncertainty.

Sway with the rope,
Find the rhythm,
Or the dissonance will
Will harshly unbalance.

Let go of the fear
If you can. Let it go
Or it will embrace you
And drop you like a stone.

How many steps remain?
How many are too many?
There may be only one.
The last one.
