This poem effectively says it all. We often wonder when we post a poem, which we think not too bad, yet it gets no comment at all. However, my experience has been that those poems which seem to be excellent (not talking about my own humble work here!) are often not commented on because others are not sure how. Some people just flatter because they know the person, others insult, some take great pains to help and give supportive criticism yet receive no thanks and rather resentment.

I think if we are going to post our work, and would like it to be read and commented on by others, then it is only fair that we should in turn do so - at least 1 comment for every post, ideally 3 comments for every posts. However, our busy lives don't always allow that so we sometimes have to be selective. Therefore, we might comment on poems that might benefit from suggestions from improvement, or those that we can just say we like. There is no easy answer.

It all depends why we write and for whom. If for an audience then we need the feedback, if still improving our craft then we need to ask for supportive critiques in the headline. Sometimes, I just write because I have too - perhaps a sort of exorcism. It is just a bonus if my words have touched another.

I agree with Gemini's comments. Our writing evolves with practice and particularly if we are open to suggestions for improvement - although in the end we must decide if we wish to change our words. Please do not be put off by any lack of feedback on Unicorn - or on any of the other boards where we often bump into each other. I read many more poems than I have time to comment on, but I still feel richer for that experience. Your Horse of Many Colours was quite something. We can't please all of the people all of the time but one day there is always the hope we will please many. I doubt I will ever be satisfied with my own work but I am happy about that, because I can only aim to get better that way with a few downfalls on the way ;)
