After having made sure he was securely cross-tied, she unbuckled his girth and pulled off saddle and pad and placed them respectively on a rack, which was conveniently situated adjacent to the wash stall.

She popped over to her trunk and extracted a halter and matching shank from its leathery depths and hurried back to the patient chestnut. Attactching shank to halter, she carefully buckled it around his neck and removed the cross-ties before, finally, freeing him of the bridle. The bridle got hung on a nearby hook, while quick hands slid the halter over his nose and buckled the strap behind his ears.

Zoe turned on the hose and tested the water before wetting his fetlocks to get him used to the temperature. Next came knees, thighs and chest, followed by back and stomach. Carefully she sprayed the hose between his hind legs and up his neck before snatching a bottle of Vetrolin liniment from the well-stocked shelf and dumping a bit into a bucket. She diluted this with more water from the hose, then dropped a sponge into the full-up bucket to make sure it was saturated thoroughly.
