Subject: On Joe Strummer's Recent Passing...A RANT

Well, once again I see another 1970's punk rock legend pass into the big sleep. Joe Strummer is dead. The old punks are dropping like flies, Joey and Dee-Dee Ramone have both left us, and now Joe Strummer has joined them. All hope of a Clash reunion is gone now, so I guess we'll just have to remember. I've actually seen bets taking place as to who will croak next: Johnny Rotten or Iggy Pop? I find myself disgusted, place 10 bucks on Johnny and go about my business (Iggy died before, and is so well preserved it's likely he may well be the only thing to survive armageddon). In light of all this I wonder: "How the fuck is Lou Reed still alive?". A old junkie pervo who was there to fan the first flames of the punk movement walks the earth longer than Joe strummer, a relatively squeaky-clean guy by punk standards? More evidence that there is no rhyme or reason to the stroke of death's scythe. Anymore I wouldn't be suprised to hear that Ian MacKaye died from a heroin overdose, or Henry Rollins was put in jail for smuggling pot for the catholic church. I find myself growing more partial to Discordianism everyday, a religion centered around the worship of Eris, Greek Goddess of Discord (y'know the one that threw the golden apple into the punch bowl at the banquet of the Gods thereby starting the Trojan war). Unlike religions which try to make sense out of a nonsense world, Discordianism just says "fuck it". I like that. As it is becoming increasingly apparent that the good don't die young, I will watch the entire Straight Edge movement collapse under inner drug scandals, and wait for "punk is dead" to become "punks are dead". And upon the hour of my passing I will remember this statement and scream "hail Eris" before the comet comes to blow us all into oblivion.
