Subject: HELENA CHILD MAULED BY 900 LB. GRIZZLY BEAR AS GOVERNOR MARTZ LOOKS ON

HELENA, Feb. 5- In a bizzare and tragic incident, Helena toddler Mickey Gale, 3, was mauled within an inch of his life by a 900-pound grizzly bear on the lawn of the Montana state legislature on Thursday. He is currently in critical but stable condition after being flown to Brigham Young Memorial Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Gale was standing next to Montana Senator Max Baucus, who was giving a speech on the merits of the Head Start program, when the bear emerged from the front doors of the legislature lobby. Security workers at the legislature building believe that the bear likely escaped from a cage in the basement. The grizzly ran towards the podium at a fast yet steady pace, quickly knocking Senator Baucus (who sustained a few minor lacerations) out of its path and then running away with the child in its mouth.
Present at the scene was Governor Judy Martz, who was seated behind Baucus and Gale at the moment of attack. Witnesses and reporters present at the event confirm that Martz watched the attack in a terror-induced paralysis, which a few spectators took as a sign of apathy to the attack.
"I was stunned" Martz commented, "the bear had been put in the legislature basement two years ago to help us deal with environmental lobbyists, and the security system was so up-to-par that I had thought there was no chance of an accident like this."
At this current point in time the whereabouts of the grizzly bear are unknown, and it may be possible that the bear is responsible for the deaths of several Earth First! activists protesting the construction of a small tributary dam south of Canyon Ferry. This development compounded with Martz's apparent lack of concern with the earlier attack may be responsible for the results of a recent Great Falls Tribune poll, which stated Governor Martz now maintains a public approval rating of less than 5%.
