Completely different, as far as I can think:

1. In the West:
Massed Allied land invasion of Normandy (D-Day 6 June 1944), followed by steady land-advance through N France and into Germany. Setback at Battle of Bulge (Dec 1944-Jan 1945), but then advance continued. An attempt to 'hop' over enemy forces to advance faster (Arnhem, Sep 1944) was a disaster. Russia was closing in from the east and the two sides met in the middle at Torgau (23 April 1945).
2. In the East
US forces defeated the Japanese navy at Midway (June 1942). They then 'island-hopped', 'jumping over' islands controlled by the Japanese, always attacking the islands accessible to their bombers. Stiff battles at Iwo Jima (Feb-Mar 1945) and Okinawa (Apr-Jun 1945). When their bombers got in reach of Japan, they dropped the atom bombs on Hiroshima (6 Aug 1945) and Nagasaki (9 Aug 1945) to make Japan surrender.

So the differences are:
1. land-war v sea war
2. mainland invasion v attacks on key islands
3. joint mass invasion v specific attacks
4. steady advance v island hopping
5. pincer attack v single prong advance by US
6. Russia involved v US dropped atom bomb to bring the war to an end before Russia could get involved.
7. all of Germany conquered v Japan surrendered before any fighting in Japan.
8. conventional war v atom bomb
9. Germans surrendered and soon joined the Common Market v some Japanese soldiers on isolated islands never gave up and continued fighting until the 1970s!!!

I can only think of one similarity: the mass bombings of civilian targets (eg the thousand-bomber raids) - compare the firestorms at Dresden (Feb 1945) and Tokyo (see http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/2WWfirestorm.htm).
