'The Wartime Conferences' - possibly the most boring topic know to man.

The Allies met frequently throughout the war, to co-ordinate their efforts, and to plan what would happen after the war. Thus the conferences were vital to winning the war, and for creating a peaceful world after the war (though, as the war cam to an end, tension crept in, and Yalta and Potsdam helped to create the confrontation that caused the Cold War).

Here is the list, if you can read it without being physically sick!

1. AUG 1941 - ATLANTIC CHARTER
Roosevelt and Churchill promised to oppose the Nazis and shoot U-boats on sight.

2. DEC 1943 - TEHRAN CONFERENCE
Talks about how to end the war in Europe; Stalin wanted Britain and the US to open up a second front - they delayed.

3. AUGUST 1944 - DUMBARTON OAKS
Sorted out the structure and organisation of the United Nations after the war.

4. FEB 1945 - YALTA CONFERENCE
see <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/cold_war4.htm.">http://www.johndclare.net/cold_war4.htm.</a> Discussed eastern Europe and the division of Germany. First signs of tension between the allies.

5. JUNE 1945 – SAN FRANCISCO CONFERENCE
50 nations meet for the creation of the United Nations (led directly to Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948).

6. JULY 1945 – POTSDAM
see <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/cold_war5.htm.">http://www.johndclare.net/cold_war5.htm.</a> Discussed Poland, reparations and eastern Europe. Open disagreement between US and USSR – led to salami tactics and Churchill’s Fulton speech = start of Cold War.
