Subject: Consequences of Korean War

1. Horrific human consequences of the war - especially for the Chinese and North Koreans - but nb also American deas (MASH)
2. In fact, since only a ceasefire, not a peace, was declared, the war never came to an end - just the fighting. North and South Korea still hated each other (ie the political situation was exactly the same as before the war).
3. Korea was geographically exactly the same as it was before the war (ie the war had no substantial consequences!) Certainly, the US failed in its aim to make N Korea a democracy, and N Korea failed in its attempt to turn S Korea Communist.
4. It maqrked the entry into world politics of China as a world power.
5. The USSR accused the UN of supporting the USA - Trygve Lie, the UN Secretary General, resigned.
6. In America, fear of Communism ran wild, leading to the McCarthy era, the arms race and the formation of a web of anti-Communist alliances (NATO, SEATO, OAS). Huge sums were paid to countries like Persia to stop them turning Communist. Vast forces were placed in West Germany to stop Soviet expansion. Soon after, Russia formed the Warsaw Pact.
7. Fearing the advance of Communism elsewhere in south-east Asia, the USA began to pump money and military aid to the French in Indo-China (this policy would ultimately end in the Vietnam War)
8. However, Truman's sacking of MacArthur stopped those Americans who wanted to go to war with the Communists - ie Truman reasserted that (however aggressively) the US policy would just be one of CONTAINMENT, and that the US would not turn the Cold War into a Hot War.
