Good question!
It is one of 'those' questions you may well meet in your exam - when you first see it it will flummox you, but if you think about it, and put 2 and 2 together, you already know enough to write a good essay.
This question can be answered by using information from three of the pages on Russia on the website:
1. Bolshevik Russia (<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/Russ6.htm)">http://www.johndclare.net/Russ6.htm)</a> - especially the sections on Government changes, Brest-Litovsk, Terror and War Communism.
2. The Civil War (<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/Russ7.htm)">http://www.johndclare.net/Russ7.htm)</a> - the section on Why the Bolsheviks won the war.
3. The NEP (<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/Russ8.htm)">http://www.johndclare.net/Russ8.htm)</a>

The you just write your essay along these lines - the Bolsheviks stayed in power because:
a. they set up a Communist State, with Lenin as dictator, kept in power by a ruthless secret police, and they made peace with Germany.
b. they then won the civil war against the forces which wanted to destroy them, and
c. when it looked as though they had pushed people too far, they had the sense to back off and bring in the NEP.
