You are more likely to meet the question 'Why was the Bolshevik government so hated' (which is really the same as why was there a Civil War - though you could use some of the stuff from below).

'Why was War Communism so hated' is a much harder question.

War Communism was the very fierce regime brought in by the Bolsheviks to create a pure Marxist (ie Communist) state which would win the Civil War. Many ordinary Russians did find it very harsh.

If I had to answer this question at GCSE I would use http://www.johndclare.net/Russ6.htm. I would cheat slightly and suggest that it was hated for the following reaons:

1. BECAUSE IT WAS VERY STRICT - Military discipline in factories and strikers shot. Peasants had to give all surplus food to the government. Rationing. Seizure of surplus grain from peasants' barns.

2. BECAUSE IT WAS VERY MARXIST - here I would not only say that larger factories were taken over by the government, but I would include ALL those controversial changes in Communism society - Banned religion, destroyed churches and killed priests/ a Labour Law/ Education: Science was encouraged, and useless subjects like Latin and History were banned/ Free love, divorce and abortion were allowed.

3. BECAUSE IT WAS VERY TYRANNICAL - I would put in all the stuff about the Cheka (which gathered information, killed kulaks, political opponents, criminals, protesters and strikers). I would also point out that it was a dictatorship - Lenin had closed the Assembly and expelled the Social Revolutionaries.

Can you see, again, how - if you know the basic notes - you can cobble together a valiud essay about almost anything? It is a matter of organsing the information appropriately.
