My own theory is that, if Chamberlain tried to go to war in 1935, the people of Britain's heart would not have been in it.
But because they had seen their good, honest leader messed about and lied to by this quite clearly evil man, when they DID go to war with Hitler in 1939, they had the moral high ground, and that gave them the impetus to go through those early bad days, and stick in to victory.
