if what you are saying is true, then essentially democracy doesnt exist in this country because you imply that we are effectively ideologically brainwashed by the media and simply parrotting the media's views. We do exactly what the media tells us to do- it is our dictator.

hmmmmm. about your cat, if that got as much coverage as the soham murders i think millions of people would have been writing to terry wogan (the dick) on points of view. I thinks its unfair to say people reacted as such to the soham murders becuase of the media. it is partly true but people were genuinely shocked and angry, not because the media told them to be but because it was so violently against the normal persons values of right and wrong. I dont need to drop names of sociologist and such to make that point, i think its pretty obvious.

I think its clear that people do react to the media, as if it wasnt for propaganda, world changing revolutions would never have taken place. But media plays on sentiments already in the people. I refuse to accept (or you might say admit) that my views and beliefs are instilled in me by the media, i have a brain, i choose my stance on issues based on how i feel when i hear about a situation. I hate cruelty to anything so i usually take the stance against war when avoidable and fox hunting and animal testing. Maybe they are not well informed stances (in which case i should read more of what the media puts out) but they are my gut reactions based on my nature as a person. No one told me to hate cruelty, but i would hate it against me so am against it being inflicted on anyone. Some people dont regard the same things as me as cruel, fair enough, and thats why their views differ. The same media goes out to everyone but there are many different reasons to why people take a certain stance.

I agree, the media is far too sensationalist but only because theres a market for it. Tabloids are there to please the public and do what the public wants. It is the people that call for sensationalism and so tabloids give it. Supply on demand like any business.

so in a sense, its not the media that is the dictator, because it is the public who dictates to the media what they want.
