In a Capitalist economy the goals are to help the people, like in all types of economy, however all others have failed to better capitalism. Karl Marx once said that Capitalism plants the seeds of its own destruction but this quote is more apt to his own creation ‘Communism’. Communism requires the members of the society to work simply to benefit their neighbour or realize that what benefits the whole benefits them, this would require a complete change in human psyche. Communism is capitalism without the rewards. In a capitalist economy you can work hard and achieve or do nothing and starve. In a Communistic economy you can still starve but you cannot get ahead.
Capitalism depends on people being basically selfish, the basic point is if you work hard you can get rich, ride to the top, and do whatever you want.
Capitalism also has its downsides; in a communist world you get points only if you contribute. However, with capitalism, people can, and do make large amounts of money with no real contribution to society. For example: once a person creates enough money that person can live off the interest making no further contributions to society therefore becoming a pure consumer. However for this to happen the person must have made a sizeable contribution to society to have enough money to live of the interest.
So, capitalism encourages non-contributing, support structure industry. Many organizations make fortunes simply by shifting money back and forth, from one place to another. While this is all very integral to our economy, it only exists as a side effect, it doesn't actually produce anything.
Capitalism allows people to starve just as communism does; however communism or any other type of economy for that matter, doesn’t give all people equal opportunity to better their condition as Capitalism does. The fact if they use that right or not is irrelevant.
