So I get home tonight at about 8:30 after a nice, leisurely, round-about bike ride from work, to find my phone, writing materials, and computer sitting in a puddle of water.
My immediate reaction was AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!.
I picked up the phone to call the apartment manager and tell her that the ceiling had sprang a leak. Immediately as I picked up the phone, water poured out of it. Needless to say, no dial tone.
My reaction then shifted towards AIEEEEERRRRGGGGGABAGABAGABA!!!!!!!!!!.
Investigating further, I found that neither the computer nor anything else electrical was actually sitting in a puddle of water, just whatever was sitting on the end table (like the phone) and the pile of books and papers in front of the end table. So I tried turning on the computer.
It came on, booted up, seemed to have all crucial files intact. Moreover it was able to dial-up the Great Satan, so the phone line was still okay.
This ameliorated my reaction towards shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit!!!.
One quick emergency evacuation later I was able to assess the damage. The phone, thank Buddha, was the only fatality. Possibly my last two functioning 1.44 Mb disks are also extinct, but they had nothing on them anyways. Sustaining varying degrees of damage were a writing pad containing the longhand version of Episode 75 and a few other notes; a notebook containing most of the HG character sheets plus miscellaneous notes; a stack of papers about a foot high comprising notes and jottings on everything in the HG universe; my Oxford dictionary of mythology, crucial to Deuterium Boy's colourful ejaculations; and my Canadian English dictionary and thesaurus.
The books were only moistened around the edges, and the notebook and pile o' papers only got wet enough to make it inconvenient. The writing pad was almost a loss, due to the fact that it's the only one I used water-soluble ink on, but thankfully it's still legible.
So in short, I'm out a phone, but there was no irretrievable loss of priceless HG source materials.
The worst part is that I've had to take apart my computer and stack it on the kitchen table. It's a small apartment; that corner is literally the only one with both the space for the computer desk and a working electrical outlet. Thus I have no home computer or net access (I came back to work to post this - see how much I love you?) until whatever it is that makes water pour from the ceiling unexpectedly ias fixed - which will probably involve a hole in the ceiling. I'm flying to BC on Tuesday for two weeks, I don't want to deal with this right now.
Anyway. This shouldn't affect Monday's episode unless things get worse or fail to improve.
I'm gonna go have a beer.
