Congratulations! :)

As for the question, I don't have any bands on my molars, either, but I do have brackets on all my teeth. It depends on your orthodontist and the braces system you're using (I'm using Damon) but not everyone gets molar bands anymore. They'll usually put them on if you have fillings on your back teeth that would interfere with gluing the bracket to them, or other concerns about the structural integrity of the tooth. They might also consider bands instead of brackets if the brackets keep coming off.

As far as function, bands and brackets on the molars do the same thing. Mine anchor my archwire to my back teeth - I have an overjet on top, so at my last adjustment they used the brackets on my back molars to pull the top archwire in a bit. People say that there's no "tightening" involved at an adjustment, but there sure was for me!

Some people never get bands or brackets on the back - depends whether your bite's already pretty good and you're just straightening a few teeth, I guess. It may be more common for people who are in braces for the second time.

Hope that helps!
Katie
