I've never had gum grafts, but I do want to get them for a place where the gum has receded a bit, if it's not corrected enough with my orthodontic treatment.

I'm sure it's a little uncomfortable. They numb you up, cut a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth or near your back teeth, and then stitch it to the area that has receded.

If it is suggested and if your roots are showing, you really should do it. It's nothing you can't handle, I'm sure. I believe that if the roots are showing, you are much more susceptible to cavities in the root and possibly periodontal disease. I'm not positive about the periodontal disease, but it seems logical that you'd be more susceptible.
