My story would be even longer if I wrote it all here, but this is the short version: Your first paragraph was ME in a nutshell, just 11 years younger...but I had to correct the TMJ before getting braces because I was at the 'debilitating' part and could not cope with it any longer. If I had gotten braces as a child, I probably would not have been in such bad shape. It got to the point of the joint clicking so much that it eventually locked for months. Surgery was the only way to 'unlock' it. Braces came a few months later.

I would recommend that you NOT wait until it gets so bad that you are forced to make a choice based on the amount of discomfort you are in.

Have you tried an oral surgeon who treats TMJ? He might have a different approach to treatment, other than braces or surgery, which is not always necessary.

Good Luck,

Hannah :-)
