I was given elastics on the first day that I had both my upper (front) and lower braces placed on, and I never experienced any pain with them. There is a bit of pressure, but because I wear them all the time (outside of when I'm eating) they helped move my teeth in a *big* way! I have a set going from my upper canines to my upper back molar, and a set going from the upper canines to my lower second to last molar. It was weird to get used to at first, and seemed to affect my speach, but I soon got over that as I grew used to them.

Good luck!
