Depends on how much space needs to be made. Count on about 1 millimeter per month. It doesn't look really weird - the coil is only about 2-3 millimeters in diameter, so it kind of looks like a super thick portion of archwire except if it is very tightly compressed and then it is kind of wavy. The tooth moves forward or backward (horizontally), not up or down (vertically). It does this by pushing the teeth apart. The coil wants to assume the more open position that it has before it's compressed. It pushes on the brackets to accomplish this. I did wear a transpalatal arch to keep the other teeth from moving, but if your orthodontist has not mentioned this, you probably don't need it. The coils will work without any other devices, but your orthodontist may choose to use powerchains in conjunction with the coils. I don't consider powerchains 'devices' though because they are akin to ligatures hooked together.
