When I had my braces put on the orthodontist gave me a pack of sugarless gum along with a toothbrush, dental floss and a few other things. I was told as long as the gum sugarless it's ok to chew. Also, the orthodontist's assistant said if I ran out of wax I could stick some sugarless gum to the bracket.
