Well, I'm not sure who you're talking about, but if you don't think he (whoever) is a bad ortho then go for it. I'd suggest going in for a few more consultations with different ortho's and go with who you're comfortable with.

Also, if you've been thinking about braces for over a year now, time probably isn't a big concern. Get them on with the expectation that they'll come off when your teeth and bite are as perfect as can be. You may get lucky and get them off sooner than expected or it could go twice as long. Be patient with the process.
