My ortho removes braces in the morning, does the impressions on clean, bare teeth, then makes the retainers in his lab and fits them that same afternoon. Some on the Forum have said their impressions were taken with the brackets in place, then the retainers were made and fitted later. Sometimes they went braceless for a while before getting the retainers and sometimes the retainers were ready when they debanded. So you will have to ask your ortho has he/she does things.
