I'm not in my late 20s, but I had my upper left first bicuspid extracted several months ago, and had my top arch wire placed five weeks ago. I think significant progress has been made.

I don't really have any way to actually measure how much movement has been made, but I have an ortho appointment in 36 minutes, so we'll see what they say. I'm extremely tired, though, since I've been up all night, and I just need to try not to fall asleep in the chair.

Your reaction is perfectly normal. Although I did not have that reaction when I had my extractions (I was too excited about progress and getting my upper arch wire placed), I did have that reaction when I first got my braces on. I am sure 90%+ people have that reaction after they have extractions.

You'll be fine!
