Subject: pins and screws holding bones together

Anyone have any experience s/he would be willing to share about the surgical removal of pins and screws originally implanted to hold bones together?

We are specifically looking at having the screws implanted November 2003 removed next month. They held the femur pin (nail) in place but are too uncomfortable in a skinny racer's body. The expectation is that the pin may be removed in 12 or some months. (To a layperson's eye, the pin appears to fill the entire cavity of the femur -- hip to knee.)

Thanks!
