Subject: Rohihi Speaks

The August 2002 issue of Jane Magazine features Rohini talking about some of her thoughts on modeling in New York. Here's what she had to say:

Nose Rings Aren't a Trend

"Stylists are always trying to make me look "more Indian" or "more exotic" by wrapping a shawl around my head or putting me in saris. Growing up in Delhi, I used to look at the photography in American fashion magazines and wish I could do those wild shoots. I didn't realise that they'd try to make me look so subdued all the time."

"Americans have an image of India as this place with cows [running?] in the roads, rather than a developed country. They're always shocked to hear that my mother works. Most people don't even bother to find out that I have a college degree."

"Before I came here, I never really knew that there were practically no Indian models in the U.S. At castings, I feel like there are different brackets - one for the regular blond girls, one for the Latin girls and then me. But eventually, I hope to be opening doors for Indian models and defying these stereotypes."

-Rohini Tiwari, who was thrilled when we put her in this bad-ass Just Cavalli jacket, brushed on Maybelline Cool Effect eye color in Ice Princess, and dotted M.A.C. eyeshadow in Melody on the outer corners of her eyes.
