Anand Jon, the young Indian American fashion designer, who has won many international awards and honors, added one more to his long list of recognition, when he was chosen this month to receive the prestigious "People's Choice Award for Designer of the Year 2202." Other winners include, former New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, who was awarded the "Best Hero," Dennis Basso, "Best Furrier," Tony Della/ Frank Sinatra/Elton John with "Best Male Vocalists Awards."

Anand Jon is full of raw passion and him getting the "people's choice award" is very appropriate. "The contradiction is that, here he is creating some of the most luxurious ensembles in the world competing with the best Couture houses in the world, still being very much in touch with his exotic roots in Asia as well as the street edge of NYC youth culture. It's obvious, he is the real thing," says Princess Soraya. Count Tucci, who is preparing to make a major announcement with Anand Jon in Italy at the end of the year, says, "Anand Jon's modern exotica is heralding an ideal blend of many cultures."

Opera Winfree picked Jon as one of the Best Designers of the Millennium and New York City Mayor's Millennium event, NYC 2000 on Times Square, which had featured world's topmost artists had Anand Jon, making every Indian feel proud. Recently launched Animae, "Goddesses & Doormats," which is part of a series being shown over the next few seasons, highlights the sensational woman who have often determined the course of style -quite possibly more. The collections juxtaposition two extreme perceptions of women as quoted by Salvador Dali's surrealism and explored by other turn of the (last) century pioneers such as Dr. Carl Jung's reflections on Animae, the missing void of the Feminine psyche manifested creatively or destructively. For Spring Summer 2003, Anand Jon selected the courtesan double agent spy Mata Hari, among the most lusted after women in history, lending to the look of Espionage Chic.

"Anand Jon shows the extravagance of rich colors, patterns, fabrics and all that represents the glamour and mysticism of the East," Elsa Klensch of CNN Style 2000 told of him. Selected for the prestigious NYC 2000, by former Mayor Guiliani and the City of NY among the top designers in the world and the youngest on the list. Miami Herald, wrote of him in the Fall 2001:

"Jon's edgy fashions have made him a favorite of many Hollywood celebrities, entertainers, and corporate icons." Patrick McMullen, celebrity photographer, says, "His clothes have a definite Asian flair, but he makes them modern, and he makes them youthful." "Obviously he's making use of his heritage and his background, but it's still done in a very modern, kind of western, hip way," Hilary Alexander wrote in the London Daily Telegraph.

Selected by A Magazine as among the Top 21 Asians to watch out for in the 21st century, and selected as one of the 25 "faces of the Future," by India Today, this "hottest new designer" he has really come far as a designer over the past four years. His story is the American dream. He came from India as a teenager, and he's really going to make it big, says, Rocky Aoki, owner, Benihanna and Haru Restaurants.

Anand Jon developed a passion for metals and fabrics, under the tutelage of master artisans and his grandmother, one of the most influential women in his life. During these formative years, his was a deep involvement in the yogic disciplines, which set a metaphysical yet playful flavor to all of his future creations. Today, Anand Jon often pays homage to his heritage and roots, remembering the source of his intellectual and creative impulses and the journey from the exotic shores of his motherland to the metropolitan synergy of New York City. Poet of the senses - particularly sight and touch - or "functional luxury" is an inherent trademark while sacred geometry is often an underlying structural element of the Anand Jon collections.

At 17, Anand Jon ventured from India on a scholarship towards an associate degree at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he was graduated as student speaker. He is now on their international board. Moving to New York to attend Parsons School of Design, he began to experiment with the transition from fine art to fashion and added a dosage of technology. At Parsons, he showcased limited edition adornments and jewelry while earning his B.F.A with majors in both fashion design and communication design.

Upon graduation, in 1998 at the age of 24, Anand Jon teamed up his mother, Shashi Abraham, his sister, Sanjana, and launched Amazone, his explosive Amazone collection for his Spring '99 debut at the Council of Fashion Designer's in Bryant Park, New York City. Since then, it has been a remarkable onward journey to this young and fascinating creative artist from India.

Anand's lines are extremely balanced. India has a draped culture, with a variety of fabrics, which are fantastic and as an Indian he is able to understand and translate it. His Western education has toned him down. The blend and discipline that is seen in his creation is what is typically Anand Jon. Speaking about his childhood in Kerala, Anand says "Growing in Kerala is something that gave me a foundation that is hard to explain - every sense came alive - sight, scent, touch and sounds. Nature was alive and resonating within and out of every pore of your being. I remember Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Islam all intertwined and I related to the artisans the most - they were the ones who found god in their art and creative process - whether painting or dancing or singing."

He says, "Our women are our greatest resource and not to underestimate the ones who sacrifice for the glory of others - their children, husbands, etc - because not every woman will get the limelight of a Indira Gandhi or Aishwarrya Rai.but they deserve the same respect." The real women in Jon's life are, superhuman sprites of the perfectly attired, coiffed and engaging variety. "They're part of my ongoing life," Anand Jon was quoted to have said. A partial list of these women includes, Ananda Lewis, Nadja Swarovski, Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, Elizabeth Ann Keiselstein-Cord, Devon Aoki, Princess Zarina of Malaysia and Princess Sara al Shud of Arabia. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall's daughter Elizabeth, Paris Hilton and Ivanka Trump. "My life is a theater, and I want the runway to represent that. But I also want it to represent how these clothes translate for real women," Anand Jon says.

Anand's success is not limited to fashion only. He sculpts jewelery, sketches, writes books and scripts for movies, an amazing versatility that stems from his intrinsic artistic values. Sacred geometry is often an underlying structural element of the Anand Jon collections. Anand Jon has captured turn of the century romantic mysticism, steadily ascended steadily. A transcendental yet modern amalgam, his designs reflect a unique balance of exotica, art and technology. These elements are encapsulated by the designer's quote, "I meditate at night and when I wake up, I check my e-mail." He is both modern as well as rooted in the traditional Indian artist who blends beautifully the riches of both the West and the East.
