STAR OF INDIA - The Meteoric Rise of Rohini Tiwari

Imagine you are 21, you are living in New Delhi, but your work as a professional model takes you to Bombay a lot, too. You are your own agent, since nodeling agencies do not exist in India, and also your own hair and make-up artist. Especially for the fashion shows, which require multiple layers of foundation, vast amounts of blush, and lip- and eye liner to the max. One day in May 2001, a friend calls you to tell you to take your little red car and, dressed in a sari and the whole previously mentioned shebang on your face, drive to these sacred ruins to meet a photography crew from Europe that is desperately scanning all of Delhi for a model for a Paris Vogue shoot the next day. There, with the setting sun, you chat with the photographers, who notice how open you are, how ready for anything fun. How sophisticated your body language is, how your smile can convey so many different meanings. How your eyelashes don't stop but make it all the way round the corners of your eyes. How the flirtatiousness of the Indian people is just the right amount in you. How cheeky you are. How you hestitantly tell the funniest blonde jokes of anyone. How your accent invokes all the delicate actresses of all the Bollywood movies one has even seen. How everyone at the table gasps for air when you say that someone's grandmother "expired" a couple of years ago, which to you is the correct way of saying that she died recently. How you love to read and talk about politics with such knowledge and clarity. How you never complained, not even when, after the Vogue story came out, you went to Paris alone, first time in Europe ever, went to New York, alone, first time in the United States ever. How you were excited right away to cut your hair, change your clothes, and to religiously work your body into even better form than before, never showing anyone that it does het lonely sometimes so far away from home. Well, that is how you get to be this new amazing girl on the cover of V magazine by the name of ROHINI TIWARI.
