No idea about the whole book because I don't read it. But in the fragment you placed here it is not obvious for me. Besides, Dautov did not even call the title of the magazine, the title of the story, did not describe the pictures in details. It makes me think that she hardly ever held that magazine in her hands. Fischer's behavior in the episode is also very unnatural.

I remember that in several articles on Fischer in the Internet it was mentioned that he speaks German, Spanish, Serbian and Russian.

She spent a year with him and did not know his level of German? Sounds ridiculous. Not saying that to read German girlie magazines even rudimentary knowledge of German is enough.

I can't disagree more. Suppose somebody states that the pawn is white and his opponent says that it is black. One of these statements is false and it is not clear who to believe. We have two opposite statements from Zita and Petra. Which of them is telling the truth?

When Fischer says something it does not mean he really thinks so.
