Subject: This time Khariton disappointed me.

I usually like Khariton's articles, but this one is pathetic and not clever. By the way Roman Polansky did not rape anybody and Olga Korbut is not Russian at all and Khariton must know about it.

I wonder what Fischer is feeling now that Kasparov is playing a “historic match” with Junior in
Bobby’s home town New York? The city where Fischer spent his childhood and youth, the city that was
once applauding him for bringing the Chess Crown to America. The city that knew Fischer’s chess boom
after his victory over Spassky in Reikjavik. One of my chess friends, a native new-yorker, who was in his
teens in the early 70s, told me recently that if at that time you were not interested in chess, you were
considered almost by everyone as weird!
Isn’t it a bitter feeling of injustice to understand that Fischer cannot even return to the place
where he was born while the foreign new-comers are reaping the harvest in a place that was only
his and nobody else’s? Yes, under the threat of arrest and a huge fine Fischer cannot return to the
United States. More than 10 years have passed since his second match with Spassky in
Yugoslavia where he played in violation of the UN sanctions against Yugoslavia…
Today I heard the news that Roman Poliansky, the famous movie director, is expected to return to the
United States after 25 years’ absence. As is well known, Poliansky raped a 13-year-old girl and fled to
France for a quarter of a century. Did Fischer rape anyone? Isn’t his punishment too severe?
Or another example. Last year the 4-time Olympic Champion Olga Korbut was caught shoplifting in
Florida. All American newspapers covered this episode, but nothing has been done so far, as I know, to
that “little Russian communist”, as Fischer called her, who was once received by President Nixon in the
White House.
Isn’t it time for honest chess players, chess fans and chess journalists to appeal to the US
authorities to allow Bobby Fischer, the glory of American and world chess, to return to the United
States?
