儘管是為《炮製女朋友》做宣傳，可是趙薇竟然在媒體見面會上數次表示對拍攝該片的後怕，並信誓旦旦地稱：「這部影片，是我最後一次接演這類角色！我已經丑到頭了。」
在影片中，趙薇出現了十多種造型。趙薇回憶起拍攝經歷，顯得有些不厭其煩：「拍戲期間，每天都要換三至四套衣服，特別累。」對這些造型，她更是直述反感：「坦白地說，戲中每一個形象我都不喜歡。那些形象設計有點驚世駭俗，我喜歡平淡點的。還有，拍攝要求化濃妝，這對皮膚傷害是很大的。不過為服從劇本要求，也算是我為藝術獻身吧。」
片中的趙薇時常披散著頭髮，繫著不搭調的綠色圍巾，穿著髒兮兮的男式夾克，臉上的土厚得直掉渣。為了演好女民工，趙薇更是戴著髒帽子在工地上揮鍬掄鎬，大吵大叫……趙薇說，其實獻醜只是對著導演和攝影師也就算啦，有場戲還必須打扮得怪怪地跑到上海的繁華大道南京路上去拍，讓我這怪模樣暴露在那麼多雙眼睛之下，當時覺得特別難堪，心裡真是煩死了。
