Subject: Pledge Of Allegiance...

First I'd like to thank John, Peggy and all you who helped and took part at the retreat in Eureka Springs last weekend. My son Ivan and I truly had a wonderful time meeting and sharing with all of you.
I shared at the closing circle this poem/pledge that some of you asked me to post here... so here it is.
I'd like to preface this by giving credit first to Ivan, whom I have often felt must have been a brother in a past life, for inspiration. We often travel and explore together, mentor each other and together and seperately search for answers... Secondly, I need to give credit to Biologist and Poet Gary Snyder. The first line is taken from one of his poems titled "For all." I do not remember where I found it but certainly want to credit him for providing the idea and inspiration (He wrote Turtle Island and several other books of poems and essays). For those of you not there, this Pledge was written September, 2001. A week or two after the events of 11 Sept, Ivan shared his adversion to recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" as referred to the U.S. Flag. We were both offended and concerned by the call to immediately wage war and the nationalism symbolized by waving the American flag. I sat down and wrote this in a few minutes and presented it to Ivan a day or two later...
Pledge Of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the soil,
Giving birth to flora and fauna,
In mountains, deserts and savanahs,
Framed by oceans, lakes and streams,
One biosphere,
Blessed with diversity,
With joy and wonder for all...
