One of the most difficult things about getting internet sales is the promoting of your product. You set up your website, post it on the web and then you wait in eager expectation of a flood of sales that will overload your paypal server and have your bank manager learning to address you by your first name when he meets you on the street. But nothing happens. Why? The answer is simple. To get internet sales you have to get traffic, and to get traffic you have to promote your website. Otherwise, zilch, nada, zero. No first name terms for you from the bank manager, just snotty letters from the head office, and an unmanageable overdraft.
So how do you get these magic internet sales? You have to work at it. Thats the answer. But it can be done. Here are some suggestions that I have found to be of use to me.
A good first way to kick start traffic to your website is to use traffic exchanges. There are hundreds of them out there on the internet. I wont promote any particular one, but I will give you some useful tips on how to get the best out of them.
They are all free to join, but if you do have the money to upgrade your account in some of them, do so. It will cost you around five dollars per month, but you will get much more credits, and a lot more traffic. Join around five of them at once. Use some of the credits that you earn to send traffic from one to the other. That way you will refer new customers and get free traffic to your own websites. If your website is a large one, that takes a while for someone to read, join traffic exchanges that make you wait thirty seconds on each site. I know that it is a bit boring waiting to click "next". But dont forget, that if you are reading some website for half a minute, someone else will be reading yours. If you feel that you must join exchanges that move on after a few seconds, dont promote a long website. You will be wasting your time. Use a splash page instead. Just make it a pretty "grabby" one. Here is a good sneaky way of getting the best out of traffic exchanges without paying for upgrades. Some of them offer free upgrades for a trial period, usually for the first week. Then you revert back to basic unless you pay for the upgrade. But if you keep rejoining them, and change your username and e mail address each time, you can be upgraded indefinitely. Just a thought.
Text ad exchanges are similar to traffic exchanges, except that you gain credits from looking at e mails rather than websites directly. You can also post your own text ads for people to click on. The drawback with these is that you have to repost them every day, as they wont be shown if you dont. If you do use text ad exchanges, dont bother with the banners or the little text links. I was using them for over a year when I realised that there had only been about three clicks between both banners and small text links. Concentrate on earning credits for sending out solos, and on your actual text ads. By the way, you can use text ad exchanges to promote your hubpages, but dont use traffic exchanges; they are not allowed.
Email submitters are also very useful for getting internet sales. The best ones cost around twenty dollars. The disadvantage here is that so many e mails get sent out nowadays that only a small proportion ever get read. Mass submitters that send out millions are the best. If even one percent get opened, that is still a lot. Using a good subject line can attract people to open your e mails. A good idea is to take note of the subject lines that work on you, and then use them. You can also copy the emails, and adapt them to suit your offers.

Search engine placement is perhaps the best long term way to get the internet sales that you crave. The secret here is keywords and backlinks. I have never bought a keyword in my life. I like to do things on the cheap. Key phrases is the better term to use really. When you have researched a good selection of those phrases, and then seen how they rank when you type them into your "Google" search bar sprinkle them throughout the text of your website, especially near the top. Always incorporate your best keyword/phrase in your website title. Search engines go for that. Keep the design of your page always basically the same. Dont make the mistake that I once made. I had a two column website, which I changed to one column for aesthetic reasons, but it immediately fell out of the search rankings. It took ages to get it back. Change the text as often as you like,(keep the search words/phrases). The search engines like new content. They will revisit your website, and hopefully push it up a few pages.
Backlinks are very important in getting your website to rank high in the search pages, for those internet sales. A good way to get backlinks is to post on loads of forums. Put a link to your site in your signature. You can also put comments on blogs that relate to your subject. There are some forum blasters that you can use as well. These can post your short article to hundreds of forums. They are not always quality backlinks, but they can give you links, and they will count a bit. A good easy way to get permanent links to your internet site is to use free classifieds. Some of them keep your ads permanently online after you post them. If you use the same keywords/phrases that are in your website even the ads can end up quite high in the search pages as well. I have been pleasantly surprised to find some of my old classifieds on page one of Google. It is just a pity that I am not selling the products that they are advertising still. Dont waste your time on classifieds that dont allow you to put a clickable link to your website. They're real use to you is for backlinks. Few people will actually read them straight away. After they get indexed by the search engines they will come into their own.
Well I hope that my thoughts on ways to get internet sales are of some use to you. They work reasonably well for me. When you are sunning yourself on your private carribean island it would give me great pleasure to think that my humble thoughts on getting internet sales might have been instrumental in setting you on the right path.
