Lufthansa: U.S. Airways to Join Alliance
Sat May 31, 2003 12:46 PM ET
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The world's largest airline network has voted unanimously to make U.S. Airways Group its latest Star Alliance member, German airline Lufthansa LHAG.DE said in a statement on Saturday.
"The chief executives of Star Alliance Airlines have today voted unanimously to accept U.S. Airways as a new member of the alliance," Lufthansa said in a statement issued following a meeting in Washington D.C.

U.S. Airways USALA.OB , which emerged from bankruptcy at the end of March, had already reached cooperation agreements with the group's leading members, United Airlines and Lufthansa.

Alliances help airlines as they extend networks through connections and code shares, allowing carriers to draw more customers as each can deliver trips to more places.

Lufthansa said the arrival of U.S. Airways meant that Star Alliance members now served some 771 destinations in 133 countries.

"Expanding the reach of our network through Star Alliance will create enormous benefits both for our customers and our business," said David N. Siegel, U.S. Airways president and chief executive officer.

U.S Airways' official entry into the Star Alliance was expected in the next nine to 12 months, the statement said.
