Following defeat at Winterton on Saturday, we can no longer disguise the fact that we are performing abysmally. I wasn't at the game on Saturday, but by all accounts it was pretty dire, yet hardly unbelievable. Although we beat Glasshoughton Welfare 7-2, it has to said we made hard work of that.

I have to agree with Winterton's Manager, we try to play too much football at times. We have the quality within the team, but sometimes quality over-compensates for good old grit and determination. Paul Gallagher's definately the right man to get that kind of performance out of the lads, and it will come I'm sure.

My short term solution is: Get Peter Holcroft on the slim fast and bring him back. Steve Tobin is great, but without Holcroft's distribution we are lost. We need somebody with his kind of vision. Stick Mike Heverin behind Stuart Rudd & Carl Osman, Heverin's clearly not doing the business, but if he's taught how to jump then perhaps the odd flick-on to the front boys will pay dividends. We need his height at set-pieces, but perhaps his pace from the centre would be the perfect foil for the boys up front. Heverin's not classy, but he works hard, and I honesty think if we set him off running down the middle, we will get some rewards. Don't forget whilst we are attacking we aren't defending, so whilst Heverin cuts through the heart of defences, we will have Tobin, Cole & a fit Birchall to pick up the pieces that he'll leave behind. So even if we don't have Holcroft back, those lads can release both Rudd & Osman for devastating effect. And whilst all that is going on, we can keep a solid line at the back. We don't need to be committing suicide at the back.

Let's get Craig Murphy back as well, just while things aren't running so smoothly. He was good at controlling the pace of a game, and was more thoughful in his approach. If he couldn't get a decent enough cross in he used to take on the defence himself, and weighed in with the odd goal.

I think it is time to forget how good we think we are, and start concentrating on how much better we should be. It's not as bad as having to totally re-build, we just need to understand where our weaknesses lie.

Come on Skem...you can do it!
